Happy Birthday, Baby Girl!

For this weeks "Embrace the Camera" post, I've decided to share some pics of my baby girl on her 11th birthday.  How lucky am I that she chose me to be her Mom?  I couldn't imagine life without her.  She has made it such a wonderful world.  She loves life more than anyone I know.  I've been told by more than one person that she is full of life.  And, you know what...she is!  I've never met anyone like her.  I am a lucky mom!

When in Rome...

Can't believe it's been a month since my last "Embrace the Camera" post!  Time goes by so fast when you are preparing to move 1/2 way around the world...again.
From the top of The Spanish Steps
Our last trip in Italia was to Rome.  We visited The Spanish Steps and Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain) our first day/night there.  AMAZING!

Our next day in Rome, we went to The Colosseo (The Colosseum) and visited San Pietro in Vaticano.

Wonder if we will ever see this in the States

What a way to say Arrivederci to Italia.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I can't even begin to list all of the things I have to be thankful for.  I can tell you that if you are reading this...YOU are one of them.

We'll be starting a new adventure soon, and I am very thankful that the house is almost organized.  But, at the same time sad to say good-bye to my second home.  Italy will always hold a special place in my heart.

Happy Birthday, Grams!

*Another post that was written 10/18/10, and was in the drafts*

Talked to my Grandma late last night (well, late for me).
It was her birthday.
Oh, how I miss talking to her everyday.
It's been over a year since I've seen her.
I remember that as a little girl I would look at her hands
and look at my hands
and I was in awe at how much they looked alike.
I remember as I got older, I would still look at her hands
and look at my hands
and they still looked alike.
Some of my first memories are at my Grandparents house.
Birthday parties
Easter egg hunts
Summer dinners
LOTS AND LOTS of 2nd Cousins.

Buon Compleanno, Nonna & Tanti Auguri!

Arrivederci, Milano!

*This was originally written on 10/29/10, for some reason it wasn't "posted" but was saved as a draft*

It's almost time to say Arrivederci, Milano!  I can't believe it.  I'll never forget the initial feeling I had when we stepped outside of the Airport.  We had just flown from San Diego to New York to Milan.  We were EXHAUSTED!
Two kids
a dog
nine suitcases
five carry-ons
and two parents who were full of excitement and fear.

Well, now, I am preparing to leave this beautiful country.  So many different emotions running through me.  So many things I will miss.  But, Milano, we will be back, someday!

Arrivederci, Venezia!

The Family in front of Gondolas
Took our last trip to Venice yesterday.  What a sad day!!!  It was a rainy day and I was kind of hoping to experience Acqua Alta, but, no such luck.  But, even without that, I found the city absolutely stunning!  Sure, it was grey and a little rainy, but nonetheless, amazing.  All day the kids were walking on these "tables".  I kept telling them to get down, we don't do that.  I mean, these tables are set up EVERYWHERE!  Well, now, I realize they aren't tables, per say, but actual "stands".  People use these to stand on so they are not wading in Acqua Alta.  Who knew!

We had a fabulous lunch of Gnocchi, Melanzane alla Parmigiana, Margherita Pizza and Zuppa di Minestrone. Oh, how I will miss the food from this beautiful country, but, I promise you, we will be back.

I thought I'd leave you with a couple of pictures from our beautiful day.  Enjoy!!!

Top 25 things I've learned while driving in Italy

  1. There are no laws or "rules of the road".
  2. If there are laws or "rules of the road" there is no reason to follow them.
  3. If you try to follow some type of laws or "rules of the road", you WILL get honked at.
  4. If one car honks, every.other.car feels the need to honk
  5. Nobody ever knows what they are honking at.
  6. If you don't move immediately when the light turns green or slightly before it turns green, you WILL be honked at.
  7. If there is traffic and nobody can go anywhere, there WILL be honking.
  8. It's OK to double park...anywhere!
  9. It's OK to park on the sidewalk.
  10. In fact, it's OK to drive on the sidewalk, especially if you are a motorini.
  11. Everyone but you has the right of way.
  12. The faster the better.
  13. If you drive a motorini (scooter/vespa/whatever you want to call it), you must be able to put your bags at your feet, hold your cell phone with your helmet and smoke a cigarette.
  14. Bicyclists think they own the road too.
  15. Bicyclists think they own the sidewalk.
  16. It IS possible to ride a bike, smoke a cigarette, talk on the phone, hold an umbrella, all with a broken arm.
  17. Yes, as a matter of fact, you can also carry an ironing board while riding a bike.
  18. You can ride a bike with a child in front and a child in back and a child running next to you.
  19. One way streets are only suggestions.
  20. Heck, lanes are only suggestions.
  21. When driving on the freeway, you should ALWAYS drive in two lanes...at least part of the way.
  22. Parking for anything other than a smart car is impossible to find.
  23. When parallel parking, it's OK to bump the car in front of you and behind you, until you get your car in.
  24. Pedestrians NEVER have the right of way.  OK, sometimes if you have small children you do, but don't hold your breath.
  25. Street signs can be of no help.  Streets either change names in the middle of the block or the street signs point to the same place in two opposite directions.

Embrace the Camera - October 28th

Ciao, Tutti!

TWO POSTS IN ONE DAY!!!!
He** must be freezing over.
But, I look forward to Embrace the Camera and since I think I have some pics,
I'm gonna share.

One of my favorite memories at my Grandma and Granddaddy's house when I was little was when Grandma would put a RECORD on her record player.  And, it was a "work out" record.  HA HA HA!!!  I used to beg her to put it on so I could exercise with her.  Or, I'd even exercise alone.  It was great.  I'd ask her to pull out this mat, not that I needed it, but hey...

Anyways, I remember the mat was brown, and thin, and had writing on one side to show you how to exercise.  But, I never used that, I used the cool record player.  Come to think of it, I don't even think my kids know what a record player is.  Maybe they do because of my Aunt Debbie & Uncle Scott.  Hmmm...think I'm gonna have to ask them.

Okay, back to my story to go with my Embrace the Camera pictures.  Anyways, the other day, the kids were asking Daddy if he was going to do Yoga.  They LOVE working out with Dad.  Dad is REALLY into the P90X right now and so on Yoga days, the kids do what they can.  (Their favorite move is the crane.)  So, it was Yoga day, and look what my babies did...

Doing Yoga with Dad.
(Ignore the laundry in the background)

OK, well, that's it for today.  But sometimes, I have to explain why I chose that particular picture to post.  After all, these are the things memories are made of.

Now, GO!  Embrace Your Camera!!!!

What an experience!

Took my First Aid/CPR/AED training yesterday.  WOO HOO!!!!  I am now certified again.
It was a good day.  So much has changed since the first time I took it.  WOW!

After a full day of training, had to head to the Doctor's...YUK!

***WARNING:  MAY CONTAIN WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION FOR SOME (like my Grandparents or my Dad...LOL)***

Now, with that FAIR warning...
Let me tell you about a visit to the Doc.
Not a GP or Family Physician, but the "Girl" Doc.
HOLY COW!!!  Interesting.

First, she ran out of robes and they don't use sheets.
Yep, for all of you who know about what happens in these appointments
Just imagine.

In a room, which is also her office
Undressing behind a make shift curtain, while having a conversation with my Doc.
Then laying on the bed for the most HATED.exam.EVER.
It was cold.
I mean, it's Autumn in Milano.
Anyways, I guess this is the norm in Europe.
In fact, a girlfriend said that the US is pretty much the only country she has been to that uses such devices of modesty.
Interesting.
Exam Over...THANK GOD!
I'm getting dressed...and still having a conversation with the Doc.
Go to pay, her office doesn't take credit cards...CRAP!
Off to find a Bancomat (ATM)
Found one...YES!  Servizio non opertivo (or something like that).
Searching for Bancomat #2, Found it...YES!  Sevizio non opertivo.
Off to search for Bancomat #3
Found it...YES!!!  AND, it works!!!
Third times a charm.
Hike back to the office, pay my tab and head off to figure out how to get home.
I mean, I'm in the metro dead zone.  But, I see some lots of trams and buses.
Figure out which tram takes me home and so I get my biglietto, and go wait for the tram.
"Tram 12 - arrivo 12 min".  I wait...and wait...and wait.
Finally, it's down to two mins and I'm watching for it.  Waiting.  I'm getting Colder by the minute.
After all it's Autumn in Milano.
Next thing I notice, is it's back up to 10 mins.
Forget it!  I decide to walk to the next stop because up ahead there were trams stopped on the tracks.
I can see up ahead and there are MORE trams so...hey...these boots are made for walkin'...right? (Although, I was wearing the most uncomfortable pair of tennis shoes I own!)
I walk up a little further and their are polizia, ATM (Public transportation people) servizio's, So....with that, I walk further, and guess what.  A bus had hit someone.  Thank goodness I wasn't there earlier, I mean I had JUST taken my first aid/CPR class.  (Not that I would have used it.  Italy doesn't have a Good Samaritan Law.)
So...I ended up walking home.  I have NO idea how far it was, but it took me 2 hours.  UGH!!!!

This weekend is Halloween!!!!  Looking forward to a Halloween Festival on Friday and Trick-or-Treating on Sunday.  Thank goodness there is no school/work on Monday!  ;)  We are going to need at least one day to recover.

Embrace the Camera - October 21st

So, not much to say, but thought I'd share a picture that I know everyone is dying to see.

Brian in his Lederhosen at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany
The kids response:

Ky - "He actually wore that!?!"
Buddy - "He really did wear it!?!"

LMAO!  I think the tone of their voice was funnier than what they actually said.  LOL

I have more that will be shared soon.  Just hang in there...

How do you get motivated?

So, one of my "bucket list" items is to RUN a 1/2 marathon.
I know, crazy, right?
But, I REALLY would like to start running.
I think about it
A LOT.
I always plan on dropping the kids off at the bus stop,
and then heading out for a run
although right now it would be more walking.
But, by the time I get them on the bus, I'm ready to just go home.
I think of all the homework I have.
If there is work to bed done.
What needs to be done in the house.
I know...
they are all excuses.
I really could find time to run walk,
but I don't have the motivation.

Any ideas on how to get
MOTIVATED???

Welcome, Fall!

Wow!  I think Autumn has hit us.
Being from Southern California, I've never "experienced" fall.
Boy, I've been missing out!
Last year, of course fall was here.
I think I was still to "shocked" to notice.
All of my senses were still on overload.
I was still missing...
my home,
my family,
my friends,
my life.
This year, I am loving the change of the weather.
The kids are pointing out the leaves falling to the ground.
They get excited to see their breaths as they smile and laugh on the way to the bus stop.
We have been so lucky to experience this.
Having four distinct seasons is...
REMARKABLE!
It is something that every single person should experience at least once in their life.
The cool crisp mornings,
The changing colors on the leaves,
The leaves fluttering to the ground.
The leaves crunching as you walk.
This is Fall...
Maybe I'll try to get some pictures of all of this beautifulness that is
ITALY in the FALL.

Embrace the Camera - October 7th

It's that time of week again!

Now, I didn't take any pics this week.
Don't know why.
Bad Mom!

But, never to fear...
I decided to share some family pics this week.
This is a week before we left for Italy.
The last time I saw 2 of my nieces and
two of my nephews.
The last time I saw my brother and sister-in-law.

It's been a long year.
It's been an adventurous year.
It's had it's ups and downs.
Mostly it's ups.

I'm really missing my family.
And my friends.
I miss my backyard full of kiddos
jumping on the trampoline,
playing tether ball,
picking vegetables from the garden.

Here are some pictures for Embrace the Camera.
They were all taken in August of 2009.
ENJOY!!!

The Granddaughters.

My and my oldest nephew.

ALMOST the whole family.  Just missing my Sister and brother-in-law
and 3 nephews.
My Aunt and I.  I LOVE YOU!!!!

Aunt Debbie, Me, Kalyssa, Kyleigh, Bryanna, Shannon.
The "Mall" girls...again.

It's your turn!
GO
EMBRACE YOUR CAMERA!!!

What time is it?

What time is it?
Yeah.  I ask myself that at least 100 times a day.
I'm always thinking of somebody I want to call and it is always at the wrong time.
Just.My.Luck.
I miss talking to my Aunt Debbie every.single.day.
I miss talking to my Grandparent's (all 4 of them) at least every other day.
So, it's fair to say that the thing I hate most about living here is the time difference.
Take, for example, right now.
It's 9:00 pm my time.
Some of the people I want to talk to are at work.
Pretty much all of them are
or should be...

I'm sitting here watching a movie
(should be doing homework)
and all I can think about is that this time difference
well, it BLOWS.

I can't tell you the last time I talked to my nieces and nephews
or my Sister and Brother-in-law
or my Brother and Sister-in-law
or my Grandparents
or my Aunt Elaine and Aunt Cindy
or my Aunt Debbie and Uncle Scott
or my Cousin Casey
or my parents
or my Best Friend.
Yep...this time difference
REALLY BLOWS.

Anyways, haven't written a blog in a while
and figured this was as good a subject as any.
And, just because I don't call
doesn't mean I'm not thinking about you.
It's just that as I've said before...
this time difference, yeah,
IT TOTALLY BLOWS.

Well, gonna go watch a movie
and drink a beer
We'll chat soon.
Love you all!!!

Hopefully, tomorrow I'll be able to find a picture
for...

Embrace the Camera - Sept. 16th

I'm back!!!  I didn't participate last week, well, because I really couldn't find a picture.  Then I realized like two days ago, that I never downloaded the pics from our trip to the mountains.  My hubby took this pic of the kids and I.  I thought we were all "posing", otherwise, I would've acted silly too.  Oh well...
Yep, those are my babies in the back playing in the water.

And, here's one of us, because it is a MUST to try Gelato in every.single.Italian city you visit.  I had Streudel, and notice, I'm the only one who is empty handed...

Gelato in the Dolomites!  YUM!

When Buddy and Daddy were on a hike they came across quite of few of these.  Anybody know what they are???
What am I?
And, even though none of us are in this picture either, I just wanted to share a picture of the beauty that is Italy...

Now, will you please go embrace your camera???

9/11

I found this picture doing a google search.  There were so many pictures to choose from.  Some with the towers, some without.  Some with the planes hitting the towers, some of the NYC Skyline after the towers fell.  Pictures of people running, covered in dust...crying.  Pictures of firefighters and police officers coming together...responding.  Pictures of AMERICANS...coming together as ONE.  The reason I chose this picture is because I vividly remember the pictures of the attacks like it was yesterday...only, it wasn't pictures, it was live on television, and they will forever be embedded deep into my memories.

I'll never forget the horror of what was happening.  I was spending the morning like I did every other morning.  Getting ready for work.  My little Sister was in CA with her son.  This was supposed to be a happy week.  My brother-in-law and some of my very best friends were returning from a six month deployment.  They were sitting off the coast of California floating around until it was time to "head home".  This was two days away (I think).  Later that week, we were going to welcome them home. I always had the Today Show on in the background.  The "old" Today Show, with Katie Couric and Matt Lauer.  All of a sudden, they were talking about a plane hitting the World Trade Center.  WHAT?  How is that possible?  What a horrible, horrible accident!  Those were my immediate thoughts.  All of a sudden, the news turned from it being an accident to it being an attack.  Immediately, I ran downstairs and woke up my sister.  My phone started ringing off the hook, I was calling Brian to find out anything (not that he'd know).  I called Amy, my sister in law...or maybe she called me.  I don't know.  I just remember phone calls.  And then watching the Pentagon get hit and then Pennsylvania.  I remember thinking about a childhood friend who I had known became a flight attendant for United.  I remember praying for her and her family, although we hadn't talked in ages.  I remember crying with my Sister, because I was sure they were going to turn my brother-in-laws around and who knew when we'd see him again.  I remember thinking I had to get to work.  I left Ky with her daycare provider and tried to go on with my day.  I was at work for a few hours, talking to colleagues, checking the internet, going to the break room to watch the news.  I really don't think any of us got anything done that day.  I think we were all just trying to find some "normalcy".  Well, my normalcy was about to be rocked to the core. Another girlfriend called me to tell me to get home because the base was about to go on lock down.  All I could think about was my baby girl and I needed her.  She needed me.  I worked from home for the rest of the week.  I watched the news.  I cried.  I felt an enormous sense of pride. I can't begin to tell you how proud I was AM to be an American.

Well, we got to Welcome Home my brother and my friends.  What a joyous day.  But, during that day, there was still a sense of melancholy, because we all knew that at any second they could be called to defend America...they were Marines.

I remember shortly after 9/11, ten days...maybe, my baby brother left for Korea.  He's in the USAF.  I remember standing at Ontario Airport saying Good-Bye "See You Soon".  As he headed up the escalator and I was leaving the airport with my Dad and my sister-in-law and everyone else, I remember just this raw emotion coming over me.  I've never, never, never felt like that.  I don't know if it was the days since 9/11 trying to be strong.  I don't know if it was the fact that my baby brother was leaving...without his family.  Was it because of the unknown?  All I know is that I let out these sobs from deep in my soul.  I can't begin to tell you how much I love my brother and sister.  They have been the constant through EVERYTHING in my life. I can't begin to describe the unconditional love that fills my very soul for them.

Well, we've made it to the nine year anniversary of the attacks.  As a family we have sacrificed so much towards the war on terror.  Brian has deployed, we've missed birthday's, anniversary's, and major holidays in support of our freedom.  I am proud of my husband.  I am proud of my family.  Most of all I am proud that none of us let 9/11 define us and I am proud to say I will Never Forget.

I don't think I have done justice to what I would love to convey.  I wish I had the ability to write with words that can tell a story.  To truly describe my heartfelt emotions.

Where were you on 9/11?  How did you spend the days or weeks after 9/11?  We all have a story and I'd love if you would share yours with me.

In closing, I am going to leave you with a video that I hope you will enjoy.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Christopher Michael

Well, since it's raining outside, and I don't feel like "getting out", I thought this would be a perfect day to tell you how my life changed on April 4, 2003.  As pretty much all of you know, Brian was deployed to Iraq when I was 32 weeks pregnant.  I knew our little guy was going to make his appearance without his Daddy around, but we did what we could to prepare.  We picked out a name, Grandma Kim made his "bedding".  Of course we wanted tools, well, because that is Daddy's hobby.  We saved the diaper holder, the curtains, the sheets, the bumper, etc.  In fact, Christopher still uses his blanket.  Anyways, back to the real reason I'm writing.

Brian and I found out I was pregnant when we were in Sacramento for Ben's baptism.  Of course, we told his sister and Scott, but didn't tell anyone else.  Kyleigh, Brian and I went back home to Oceanside and everything was a blur.  I told my Aunt Debbie in August when there was a small emergency at her house.  Probably not the best way to tell somebody, but hey...you gotta do what you gotta do.  In September, we met my Dad, brother, sister-in-law and niece at Disneyland for the day.  On our way we stopped and had a shirt made for Kyleigh that said, "Kyleigh's gonna be a big sister".  Nothing like almost giving my Dad a heart attack at Disneyland.  Anyways, pretty uneventful pregnancy, until the day before he made his entrance.

Luckily, I have the most amazing friends.  With Brian half a world away, there were a few of my friends on stand-by.  Some to take Kyleigh, one to be my coach, one to videotape (yes, we did in fact videotape.  ONLY because Brian was gone.)  Anyways, my sister-in-law, her two boys and Brian's Mom were there to help.  It was quite stressful because we were in such a small house and I was already emotional because Brian wasn't there.  We did A LOT of walking, trying to get my labor going.  I was hoping I would go "early" since Ky was two weeks early, but no such luck.  Anyways, the day before he made his grand entrance, I remember being at Best Buy with my little lady and there was a big yellow circle.  And, Ky, being the active 3 year old she was, decided she wanted to use that has a track.  She ran around and around and around.  I don't know why that bothered me so much, but I remember bursting into tears in the middle of Best Buy and calling my girlfriend Joy (Coffin) to see if Ky can come over there and spend the night.  I just couldn't handle it.  I took her over there, went home and took a nap.  I woke up to Amy, my sister in law, cooking dinner.  I still remember what it was...chicken parmigiana.  It was so good!  Anyways, after I ate, I went back to bed and I woke up at about 5:00am and went to use the bathroom, I yell for Amy (who was asleep on the couch) and she came in and told me I needed to go to the hospital.  I decided I needed to shower first.  She was going to wake up Cathy so she could drive me to the hospital.  We left at about 5:30am and at this point I think I was pretty much in labor.

It seemed like a long drive to the hospital.  I think I felt every.single.bump. in the road.  We  managed to make it into the ER after having to stop a few times in the parking lot to breather through my contractions.  We got in there and I told the Nurse to PLEASE not send me home.  She said she had to check me and then she would tell me, but if she had to guess, I'd be having a baby today.  Well, she checked me and I was at a 5!!!  YEE-HAW!!!!  Let's get this show on the road!!!!

Got to my room at about 6:30 and remember being asked a million and one questions...and, it seemed like they were asked over and over and over again.  Well, at 6:45 my water broke!  Boy, talk about needing to push.  Well, the nurse kept telling me that I couldn't push.  Finally...after a good 10 minute debate...or more like me telling her I had to push, I asked her why I couldn't push.  Her comment, "It's too much paperwork if I have to deliver this baby."  HA!  Talk about a shock.  I looked at my coach and told her I was getting ready to push.  I looked at Brian's mom and asked her if she could deliver the baby and there we went.  We all got "into position" and I started pushing.  The doctor came in, we had a quick talk about what was going on and she put one glove on and draped her scrubs over her with only one arm in and Christopher made his entrance.  I started pushing at 7:00 ish and Christopher was born at 7:02.  I didn't even make it through 2 sets of 10 (those of you who have had a baby know what I mean).  Well, he made his appearance at 9lbs. 4oz.

I love you, Buddy!

P.S.
I will NEVER forget the wonderful 7 weeks that my Grandma was able to come in and spend with my small family while waiting for Brian to come home from Iraq.  I will be forever grateful for all of those memories and the nickname she gave to my little guy that has stuck to this day.  My Grandma was there when Brian came home from Iraq and was able to witness Brian looking at his son and holding him for the first time.  Love you, Grams!

Back to School

Ciao, Tutti!

It's that time of week again:

Although, this is only my third time participating, I'm really enjoying it.  I look forward to Thursdays and what picture(s) I'm going to share.  I find myself during the week making sure I have taken a pic with my babies and me!

So, that brings me to this week!  YAY!!!  These are the infamous "first day of school" pictures.  We are walking out the door to go get on the bus...or so we thought.  Read the previous blog to find out what happened.  Anyways, here you go.  Here are pictures with butterflies in our tummies and the "I can't believe I have a 2nd & 5th grader, I'm not going to cry", thoughts going through my head.
